Delivery app design

Introduction

The truth about working as a freelancer is this— sometimes a client loves your app design so much that they come back with more projects. However, sometimes you try your best and the design just doesn’t make the cut.

A client, whom I’ll keep anonymous, booked a meeting with me to design a delivery app. The app would let residents of the UK get a quote from independent delivery partners based on the package and distance. The users will choose the delivery partner with better quotation and ratings.

Research and User Interviews

I did some research to find out the exact pain points of users. An overwhelming number of users online had complained that most delivery apps were too cluttered. Every new app,in an attempt to be unique, stuffs the interface with too many elements.

Sometimes the right answer is the simple one. So, I did what I do best— designed a minimalist, simple delivery app that gets the job done without hassle.

Feature

User-friendly Design: Any user can easily get started by clicking on the “Get a Quote” feature. From entering the address to confirming a booking— the process is very simple.

Simple Process: After settling on a quote the users can access the delivery partner’s profile along with order details, like the partner’s registration number, contact details and reviews. A “call” button helps users instantly contact their delivery partner.

Easy Payment: The payment process is also simple. It allows card users to easily pay for deliveries using credit/debit cards.

The Project was Stopped

There are areas for improvement in this design, of course. For example, the app needs features like live GPS tracking and a chat option. But this was the initial phase of the design, and the client decided not to continue. They needed to go back to the drawing board to make the app more unique so it could be marketed better.

Learnings

This project had a lot of potential. But there was a miscommunication regarding the ultimate vision for the app. With a few more tweaks like, additional intuitive and user-friendly features, a loyalty program and a more attractive colour scheme. Though not perfect it shows that a simple, minimalist design can help design something that users would find actually helpful.
